Abundance. It is all the rage. Stuff stuff and more stuff that promises to make you happy. A new candle, another mug, another blanket or top or pair of shoes – this is the one that’s going to change your life right!?
This summer I went out and bought new workout gear because I thought that was the thing keeping me from changing my exercise habit. If I just had the right tank top or yoga pant then I would become like those fit girls on Instagram, right?
Wrong. Nothing you buy is going to change you. There is nothing you can purchase that will grant you the motivation or willpower to change your life.
Here’s the secret they don’t want you to know: you have everything you need inside of you. You are the person you’ve been waiting for.
Every single day is a new chance to change your life. And the things that will help you get there? They’re free. Guess what got me to the gym? It wasn’t those fancy gym clothes that sat in my closet for three months, it was a friend that works out consistently and inspired me to do the same.
Guess what made me go less waste? It wasn’t fancy glass jars or beautiful reusable bags or new glass straws. It was recognizing all that I have and how easy it would be to make simple swaps, say no to single-use plastics, and the desire to show my little one how to care for our earth.
The things that are real, the things that we value most and that sustain us, are free. The love of our family and friends, the cool crisp air when we step outside, gratitude practices and meditation – all free.
You are never going to buy the thing that will fill that hole in your heart. The one that aches in the quiet moments when you are alone. The world does a really good job telling you that you can buy that thing, that they have the answer, the quick fix to alleviate the discomfort of being human. I can tell you that they don’t.
But you do.
Do you want to know the best thing about being human? You have all the power and love you need right inside of you. Start a gratitude journal, go on a walk with a friend, step outside your door and put your bare feet in the grass and wave to the trees and birds and celebrate the fact that you are ALIVE! Isn’t that so freaking cool? That you’re alive? And every day you get the chance to breathe and talk and run and sing and dance and wave and laugh.
That’s real abundance. The stuff of being alive. Seeing your shared light in other people. Looking for helpers. Being the helper. Learning to love yourself so much that when the world tells you what you need to be happy, you say nope, I’m all I need.
Gratitude and abundance do not mean that you are in a blissful state all your life. Life is not a linear path, it is a river. It is cool, blue rushing water that carries and pushes you. Sometimes it’s calm and flows. Other times there are rapids and choppy waters. Through it all, you can be aware. You can be present.
You can build a life that you don’t need stuff to distract you from.
